Revamping Small Spaces Outdoors with Weston Sawmill

Here at Weston Sawmill, we know all about transforming gardens and other outdoor spaces, so if you are struggling for inspiration we have got you covered.

For this blog, we will share some tips from our team of experts to help you create the garden of your dreams.

Creating Boundaries with Quality Fencing

High-quality fencing provides the ‘walls’ to our gardens, but they can also have multiple functions. While the ultimate goal is to define the space, they also help screen out noise, frame views and provide a surface over which plants can clamber.

Create a Plan

Gardens can fulfil a number of functions and working out the main purpose of your garden will ensure a successful design. For example, do you want to grow your own veg or do you want a lazy space that is surrounded by scented flowers? Honing your wish list is the key to adapting the space to match your lifestyle.

Look to the past for inspiration

Space can be at a premium in smaller gardens so it is best to treat your garden as another room in your house. No matter the size, a small pocket of land can be transformed into an outdoor paradise. Greening up your garden area offers a balm to the senses, a private place to sit, play, garden and enjoy the sunshine plus you can help mitigate pollution and reduce climate change.

Be flexible with your ideas

If you spot a garden idea at a show and wanted to replicate it in your outdoor space, always be flexible with your design concept. A lot will depend on your willingness to take the plunge and if you are able to source the correct materials. When looking at different types of fencing and decking, Weston Sawmill will be able to help.

For a full-scale revamp, it could be worth planning in stages over a number of seasons.

Bird Care With Weston Sawmill

Birds play an important part of British wildlife, and what better way to enjoy them by making them feel welcome in their garden. So sit back on your new bench and enjoy watching the little birds flutter past.

Bird Feeding

While we always encourage people to feed birds in the winter when it’s harder for them to forage, it doesn’t mean you should stop when summer comes back around. Over time birds build their homes near places where they can get a secure source of food. This means when you regularly make food available all year round they will be nesting nearby.

Different birds have different feed needs and feeder requirements. So if you are looking for a variety of birds in your garden, make sure you have a variety available. However, we know that many people would like to discourage some birds like pigeons and magpies, so why not keep an eye out for other birds that are coming into your garden and target your feeding just for them.

Research the birds before you go ahead and target them, some will prefer tiny seeds, whereas others will prefer fat balls.

You may also need to consider your feeders, squirrels will take all the nuts and seeds they can get to, so if you want to solely feed the birds look at squirrel proof feeders.

Bird Tables

Bird tables also make a great place for you to spread out some seeds and allow any size bird (or squirrels) to help themselves. But did you know that it also makes a great place to offer your birds some bedding?

When it comes to nesting, birds will spend a long time searching for the best bedding they can find. By using a bird table with a roof you can supply them with an offering of dry bedding. It also means that again they are likely to nest nearby, which is great if you have birdhouses up.

Bird Houses

Just like bird feeding, bird housing will vary greatly depending on the types of birds that you get in your garden. Smaller birds will often avoid larger birdhouses as they do not feel as safe, and some birds just prefer nests over houses. Again, we recommend keeping an eye out on your garden to find which birds you are attracting and choose your house accordingly.

There is a common misconception that you put a birdhouse in your garden and they will come. Sadly, it also takes a bit of patience and feeding before birds will happily nest in a new house. Birds are very weary over going into a new birdhouse in case it is already occupied. So they will often scope it out over a long period of time before making the move to go inside and look around. So keep up with the feeding, offer the bedding, and in time they will come. Don’t get disheartened if it takes a long time.

Bird Baths

They’re well-fed, they are housed, what’s next? Somewhere to bathe. During warmer or drier weather birds will look for somewhere to splash around and will even use puddles if they need to. Offering them a bath will help them to enjoy your garden and return time and time again.

If you have pets we do recommend that you raise your birdbath off the floor, or take a look at our hanging birdbaths.

treat-your-wood

Treat Your Wood Right

When you are using wood in and around your garden, whether it is in the form of a fence, a shed, or even a bench, it is important to know that you need to treat your wood to give it the best chances against mother nature. From driving rain, harsh frosts and the blazing sun, wood is subjected to the elements, and without the right treatment can become brittle and unattractive much quicker.

Wood Treatments

There are a number of different types of wood treatment currently on the market. With some boasting a number of different qualities, and with many doing the same thing just worded slightly differently, so finding the right one for you can sometimes be a bit of a minefield. The first thing to consider is the type of wood that you are protecting.

Softwood
If you have softwood in your garden, you might need to consider treating the wood with a preserve to seal the wood before you use any other type of paint or stain. This will help to protect the wood from the elements and from absorbing too much of the paint. Ideally, this will be with a water-resistant and mould protection treatment.

Hardwood
Hardwood is more durable than its softwood counterpart. Meaning that it can withstand being open to the elements for longer periods of time without significant damage. However, it will mean the wood has a more weathered appearance. To avoid this, ensure that you treat your hardwood with a good stain, preserve or paint as soon as you can.

Which Should I Use?

Other than a good quality preserve, there are two main types of treatment or protection that you can use for your external wooden features.

Wood Stain
Wood stain is a great treatment if you love the natural appearance of wood, but want to enhance the grain or add a spot of colour to lighter woods. Available in a range of colours not only can it help you to protect your wood from the elements it can also help you to create a unique look in your garden.
Good quality wood stains will penetrate the wood meaning that it will offer longer-lasting protection and colour than the like of paint, and therefore require less maintenance.

Paint
In recent years there have been a number of newcomers to the market when it comes to outdoor wood paint, with the like of Cuprinol and Dulux now offering ranges. These ranges offer a vast array of colours, allowing you to turn your garden into a space as unique to you as the inside of your home. Paint offers great protection against the elements, however, regular treatments will be needed to keep it looking fresh and protected.

If you are unsure of the type of wood you are purchasing or you would like any further advice, please contact a member of our team today who will be happy to assist you. You can also head over to our blogs for a range of ideas or information on our range of products.

garden-firepits

Garden Firepit? We’ve Got You Stocked

Over the winter months, many people visit us to stock up on their logs and coal to heat up their homes. But what about when you sit outside with your firepit? Here at Weston Sawmill, we’ve got you stocked, even in the height of summer.

The Garden Firepit

Every summer more and more people spend time in their gardens, surrounded by friends and family. But as the sun starts to set, the weather begins to cool and we look for ways to warm up not only ourselves but also our friends and family. The best way to do this is to use the ever-popular fire pit.

There are different varieties of firepit available, both on the market and that you can build yourself. With this in mind, you need to be aware of which you are using before you start lighting those fires. Using the correct materials can not only help your fire to keep burning as long as possible but also help to extend the lifespan of your fire pit.

Two Types Of Fire

The reason you need to know the style and quality of your firepit is to ensure that you are lighting the most appropriate fire.

Fires with a coal base are great if you want them to burn for longer. While you might have to top up the logs on top, the coals will help to retain the heat for longer, meaning that the risk of the new logs needing to be lit is very low. However, the use of coal also means that the fire will burn at a higher temperature. Depending on the style of firepit that you are using, the use of coal might be too much.

Usually, with lower quality firepits or enclosed firepits, we recommend not using coal and this can drastically reduce the lifespan of the firepit and may even cause immediate damage.

The other type of fire is a standard log fire. This means keeping all your materials as dried logs, wood and kindling. While this style of fire will burn at a cooler temperature, it will still give off significant heat to keep everyone happy.

Keep Your Wood Dry

When it comes to your outdoor firepit, we offer the same advice as we do with your internal stove. Keep your logs as dry as possible.

Burning wet or damp can produce an increased amount of smoke. Many areas in the UK are now smokeless zones, and while this is seldom monitored, your neighbours would have the ability to report you should the smoke become a nuisance.

To help keep your logs contact us to discuss having your log store built to order, alternatively, come and visit us to see the ones we currently have on display.

its-not-all-square

It’s Not All Square At Weston Sawmill

We know that when many people think of a sawmill, they usually consider straight cuts of wood, fencing and decking. But here at Weston Sawmill not all of our stock is purely straight lines, we also offer a range of round and half-round lengths too. So how can you add a bit of shape into your garden?

Garden Borders

When it comes to our garden borders, we take pride in the flowers, plants and shrubs that we can grow and display. The only issue is when you have children or pets that regularly use your lawn and end up in your borders! Using half-round timber you can create the perfect little border fence to mark the edge of your lawn. Not only does this work as a practical barrier to stop paws and little legs, but also acts as the perfect frame for your lawn. You can either stack the lengths on their side to offer a long straight, or cut the lengths into shorter lengths to create a short fence.

Horse Jumps

When it comes to building your own horse jumps, or indeed getting someone in to build them for you, you want to ensure that the materials you use are safe for your horses and are hardy if they take a kick or two.
Our round timber will have no straight or potentially harmful edges that can harm your horse should they kick the pole. The structure also means that it can withstand not only those almighty kicks but will not split or splinter if they bounce to the ground a fair few times. Why not start designing your new jumps ready to calculate how many lengths you will need.

Log Cabins

Here’s something for those avid DIYers to get their hands on. Whether you have a big enough garden, an allotment, or even do it on a smaller scale for the kids, why not use our round or half-round timber to create your very own log cabin.
The mixture of styles, thicknesses and lengths that we have available, not to mention those with a point ready to be forced into the ground make this a great choice of material for your cabin. Get the tools out, take some measurements, draw up designs and get to it!
Building a log cabin for the kids will not only give them a great garden escape that you have built just for them, but when they outgrow it, you’ve got some great garden storage!

This stunning shaped timber can be used in a wide variety of ways around your home and garden. So why not think about all the possibilities then come and visit us to choose the perfect timber for your new project.

fabulous-fencing

Fabulous Fencing for Your Garden

When it comes to our garden, you might not realise how much attention we pay to our fencing, until it’s not there. Here in the UK the weather has been a bit rough this year, so many of us have lost older fence panels to the gales that have been battering our gardens. Now might be the time to tear down old panels, and replace them with captivating new panels, perfectly framing your garden.

Garden Fencing

Here at Weston Sawmill, we stock the firm favourites of feather board and close boarded fencing. These are firm favourites when it comes to framing your garden. There is a reason that you see this style of fencing around many gardens, and that’s due to the tried and tested structure that allows it to withstand the harsh weather for a number of years.
If you live in a particularly windy area, such as on high ground, or near to open waters, we recommend supporting your fencing with concrete posts and even concrete kickboards underneath.

Trellis Fencing

Trellis fencing is a great decorative option to use in your garden. You can use trellis to separate out sections of your garden, giving your garden segments.
Trellis is a great way to help your climbing plants to grow, such as vines, grapes and climbing roses. Using trellis can help to give your garden height.

Picket Fencing

Picket fencing makes a great addition to the front of your home! This classic style fencing can tidy up the front of your home and replace existing fencing or as an alternative to bushes that can become overgrown and look unkempt.
This style of fencing can, like trellis, also be used to split your garden into sections. However, this style of fencing keeps the separation at a lower height to maintain your view across the whole garden.

When it comes to fencing, we recommend that you keep up regular wood treatments to give it the best lifespan possible. This can either be in the form of wood stain or preserve, which will maintain the effect of the wood, with a clear colouring, or paint which can entirely change the look of your fencing.

For more information on the fencing that is available from Weston Sawmill, please contact our expert team today who will be happy to assist you where possible. You can also head over to our blogs for a range of ideas on how you can change up your garden, including new decking this summer.

Made to measure gates in Staffordshire

Secure Your Home With New Gates

Security is important when it comes to protecting your home and family. While your doors and windows will play a significant role here, what about the external aspects of your home? Such as your driveway and garden.

Secure Your Garden

Your garden is your own personal slice of the outside world. A place where you and your family can enjoy the great outdoors, release your personality into the garden and feel safe in the knowledge that no one can interrupt your space.
Replacing your existing garden gates can help to improve the security of your garden. This means that anything in your garden, whether that is you, your family or garden furniture and tools will be significantly protected (providing you ensure that the gate is secured and locked).

Protect Your Drive

Our driveways not only act as the lead up to our homes, they can also be where a number of us store our prized possessions – our cars. Not all of us have garages large enough to lock away our cars when we are at home, so the next best thing is to have a secure gate fitted.
Our range of gates are not only ideal to cap off the end of your drive, but also to secure any entrances to your property or land. Amongst our range of gates includes our field and ranch gates, perfect for if you have a patch of land, some fields, or even just want something different at the bottom of your drive.

Made To Measure

Here at Weston Sawmill, we pride ourselves in offering the very best service for made to measure gates. We believe that no gate truly fits unless it has been made specifically to suit a certain space, whether this is for your garden, your driveway or even a field. We offer made to measure gates for both private and commercial purposes.
Not only do made to measure gates fit better, but they can also look better as you have the option of the style that you have fitted. Our range includes; field, ranch, galvanised and picket gates. We also have a selection of close boarded doors, tongue and groove gates and doors available.

decking-in-time

Decking In Time For Summer

As the summer rolls around we want to spend more and more time in our gardens, but have you considered swapping out your old tired decking for some new hard-wearing decking, just in time for the summer sun.

The Joys Of Decking

Many people have previously opted for patios for the seating area in their gardens, but we still prefer a good solid decking where we entertain our guests.
While decking does require regular maintenance in the form of wood treatments, it can be changed to any colour or tone to suit you. Meaning that if you change your garden, or just your garden furniture, your decking can be stained or painted to match.

Replace Old For New

Over time mother nature can take its toll on existing decking. Missed wood treatments can mean that your decking will age before its time, and can leave you with decking that is unsafe and fit for purpose. So, why not get it replaced in time for the nicer weather.
If you are replacing old for new, you will already have much of the groundwork ready for your new decking to be put in place, leaving you in a ready to go position!

New Decking New Space

If you are creating an entirely new space with your decking, you have all the wonders of choosing your size, your height from the ground, and even the shape of your new decking! But don’t forget you also have the hard part of the groundwork too.

All of our decking is pressure treated which improves its durability and makes sure you get the best value for money. Our sizes range from 3 metres to 4.8 metres, and we are more than happy to advise you on the best size of decking for your specific project.

For more information on the decking available from Weston Sawmill please contact a member of our expert team who will be happy to assist you. Check back to our blogs regularly for more inspiration on how you can use Weston Sawmill to change up your garden this summer.
