Taking Care of Your Fencing

Here at Weston Sawmill, we manufacture and supply a wide range of fencing in Staffordshire, Shropshire and surrounding regions. And, although the fencing we make is extremely durable, there are a number of ways to extend their lifespan and keep your fences looking fantastic all year round. We have been supplying fencing for over 20 years now and supply customers in both the commercial and domestic markets. In this blog, we’ll be looking at a few of the ways you can preserve your fencing.

Choose Weston Sawmill for Your Fencing in Shropshire & Staffordshire

The biggest threat to wooden fencing in the UK is the dreaded wood rot. You can notice it almost immediately as the fungus discolours the wood and eats through it. Eventually, this will completely destroy your fencing, but by applying chemical wood preservatives you can prevent this from happening or stop the rot before it causes any further damage. A water repellent should also be applied as the older your fencing gets, the more susceptible it is to taking damage from the rain. And, if you notice the surface of your fencing is rough or uneven, this is a clear sign of degradation that can be remedied by some sanding.

To finish your fencing off and also make the wood look fantastic, a wood stain is the perfect choice. This is a great way to bring old fencing back to life once you’ve applied the aforementioned treatments and the choice of colour is all yours. However, the wood stain should only be applied after all the other treatments have been done as the chemicals can react badly and become ineffective. A month is generally long enough to wait before applying the wood stain, but you should always check the manufacturer’s instructions first.

The Best Fencing in Staffordshire

Fencing usually serves some purpose, either to restrict movement or access and often to provide privacy.

Fencing is erected to keep animals as well as children out of a specific area and depending on its purpose the fence will be made from posts of timber, metal pieces, concrete or stone. In many cases fencing is erected simply because it is practical to do so, e.g. to keep big farm animals like horses and cows out of a certain camp/meadow and any aesthetic considerations will not impact on how the fence looks.

However, very often the fence forms part of a garden area and care is taken to make it look inviting and attractive. This is often true for smaller gardens in suburban areas or even in high-rise apartment complexes where the only garden is a balcony.

Different Styles of Fencing

Some inspiring ideas for garden fencing in areas with limited garden space, include a variety of styles from stark, no-fuss fencing in white to more ‘dramatic’ looks with a greater emphasis on colour. Experiment with patterns, which do not fit the ‘traditional’ description. Try curved fences, or lattice fencing. Also, a fence does not only have to separate or divide, it can provide the perfect spot for climbers and creepers, thereby affording you even more privacy, if that’s what you want; and a lush green to feast your eyes on.

Accessorize Your Fencing

Pot plants on top of your fence can make a huge difference to how attractive your garden looks. If the structure allows for it you’ll simply place the pots on top of the fencing or otherwise attach them with brackets. It is recommended to use plants with bright blooms on top of a white fence and more subdued colours if your fencing is painted bright.  Another idea is to use the fencing for hanging small container plants, which you attach with brackets at various intervals, thereby covering as much of the fencing as you want. Again, this will look better against a white background.

Although not as common as free standing trees, the pot-grown tree has been steadily increasing over the years and offers a range of benefits in comparison. For one, the tree is still living so it won’t lose its needles to the same extent as a cut Christmas tree will. It’s also a far more environmentally options as you can replant it afterwards so it won’t need to go to a landfill site. Many families make an event of this and plant the tree together, giving it back to nature and allowing it to grow for future generations.

Choosing Your Christmas Tree

When it comes to picking your Christmas tree this festive season there’s a lot of things to consider before you make a purchase. Fortunately, we have a huge range of beautiful real trees to choose from including the always popular spruce and fir varieties. Over the past few years Weston Sawmill have become the number one place for Christmas trees in Shropshire and Staffordshire with hundreds being sold every year. And, from the 24th November our full range will be available in our yard but the big question is, how do you choose your Christmas tree?

Christmas Trees Shropshire

Number One For Christmas Trees in Shropshire

The first and most obvious thing to consider is how much space you have in the home. There’s nothing worse than picking out a beautiful tree only for it to be too big for it’s intended room so make sure you measure up first. After that, you’ll want to consider what type of tree you want. With the Nordmann Fir the needles are big and soft making it a great choice if you have young children in the house. However, the Spruce remains our most popular choice largely due to the incredible Christmas scent that it brings into your home although it doesn’t retain its needles quite so well. And, prices for the Spruce start from as little as £15 so it’s a great choice if you’re on a tight budget.

Order Your Christmas Tree Today!

Christmas Trees Shropshire

Spruce or Nordmann? Christmas Trees in Shropshire

It’s not too long until Christmas is upon us and our trees have been coming along nicely.

We have both potted and free standing Spruce and Nordmann Christmas trees available in a huge variety of styles. Nothing gets your home feeling more festive than a beautiful real tree and we have trees to suit all budgets. We grow all of our Christmas trees in Shropshire throughout the year so they are in peak condition come December and ready to take home.

Weston Sawmill accept orders all year round for our trees and you are more than welcome to come and see them for yourself. In this blog, we are going to have a look at the key differences between our two most popular seasonal trees.

What are the differences between these Christmas trees?

The classic spruce tree is what you will find in most homes in the UK and truly is a festive classic. Spruce christmas trees smell incredible and look fantastic in the home. The spruce has a vivid green colour about it with rectangular needles and is perfect for hanging your baubles and tinsel on. However, spruce Christmas trees do tend to lose their needles quicker than the Nordman so are best off being purchased closer to Christmas day. The Nordman on the other hand has incredible needle retention so will require the minimum amount of cleaning. It also has a more cone-like shape compared to the spruce but has a glossier appearance.

Choose Weston Sawmill This Christmas

We sell both the spruce and nordman free-standing or in potted versions with each one available in roughly three different sizes. Weston Sawmill give our Christmas trees the best possible treatment all year round so they are perfect at the most wonderful time of the year. We hope you can come and visit us to see our festive trees for yourself but if not, please don’t hesitate to get in touch with us at any time for more information.
