The biggest threat to wooden fencing in the UK is the dreaded wood rot. You can notice it almost immediately as the fungus discolours the wood and eats through it. Eventually, this will completely destroy your fencing, but by applying chemical wood preservatives you can prevent this from happening or stop the rot before it causes any further damage. A water repellent should also be applied as the older your fencing gets, the more susceptible it is to taking damage from the rain. And, if you notice the surface of your fencing is rough or uneven, this is a clear sign of degradation that can be remedied by some sanding.

To finish your fencing off and also make the wood look fantastic, a wood stain is the perfect choice. This is a great way to bring old fencing back to life once you’ve applied the aforementioned treatments and the choice of colour is all yours. However, the wood stain should only be applied after all the other treatments have been done as the chemicals can react badly and become ineffective. A month is generally long enough to wait before applying the wood stain, but you should always check the manufacturer’s instructions first.

Fencing is erected to keep animals as well as children out of a specific area and depending on its purpose the fence will be made from posts of timber, metal pieces, concrete or stone. Pot plants on top of your fence can make a huge difference to how attractive your garden looks. If the structure allows for it you’ll simply place the pots on top of the fencing or otherwise attach them with brackets. It is recommended to use plants with bright blooms on top of a white fence and more subdued colours if your fencing is painted bright.  Another idea is to use the fencing for hanging small container plants, which you attach with brackets at various intervals, thereby covering as much of the fencing as you want. Again, this will look better against a white background.

I work with Swedish Redwood every day. It’s the most common wood that we work with here at Weston Sawmill – and with good reason – it’s a brilliant crafting material.

All of our wood gates, fencing, decking, tables, chairs, posts, and the rest – they’re all made from our Swedish Redwood. All of our redwood is specially pressure treated to ensure strength, durability, and quality. For our most hardy products, our wood is then treated with a water repellent solution to help stave off the elements.

But why do we use Swedish Redwood over other woods? Simply put, it’s just that it’s flexible enough to be ideal in all elements of woodworking and joinery. The sapwood is narrow and has a creamy white to yellow colour, the heartwood can vary from a pale to deep red-brown. The timber itself is very easy to work with. It’s capable of a smooth, clean finish that can be glued, polished, and completed with a variety of finishes. We’ve finally had the chance to put fingers-to-keyboard and come up with our very own blog all about our top selling products.  So (ahem) drum-roll please… Welcome to Weston Sawmill’s blog!!

Our blog will probably be focusing on things like Christmas Trees, made to measure gates, decking and fencing, but we’d like to blog about everything and anything to do with our nursery on the Staffordshire/Shropshire border.  We want this to be a very informal blog that will keep our customers up to date with all our latest news, and any current events in the world of Weston Sawmill that we’d basically like to have a chat about.
